It has been scientifically proven that a well-rested mind soaks up knowledge. Korean students are always eager to travel abroad or attend intensive ESL camps to learn English. However, there is an alternative way for Korean students to learn English, right here in Korea. Do children study too much and cram information trying to memorize English without actually learning to speak it well? Yes, but that is not the only or best way to learn to speak English. If you want students who can memorize information for tests, then yes, maybe that is a good method, but if you look at The Philippines, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, and Malaysia to name but a few, people there speak languages other than English, yet they are also actually able to speak English, usually fluently. How? They do not memorize vocabulary and grammar just for tests, they use the language in real-life and in authentic situations. A person who uses a skill, such as speaking the English language, in authentic real-life situations is going to retain that skill for life.
WHAT CAN WE OFFER YOUR CHILD?
We offer a stay with other Korean friends at Uncle Mike and Auntie Carol’s Guesthouse, in Busan, South Korea. Uncle Mike is an internationally-educated professor from Canada and his wife, Auntie Carol, is an internationally- educated early childhood educator. Together, we can provide your children with the best summer or winter of their lives. They will be making friends for life, having fun while learning English, as well as learning about themselves. Each and every day, they will be doing something different, something fun, working together as a team to solve puzzles, mysteries, making video blogs to send home to you, and above all else, enjoying themselves. They will be visiting different sites in Busan; such as, Haeundae Beach, a Lotte Giants baseball game, the United Nations Cemetery, an amusement park, the Busan Museum of Arts, Centum City, bowling alleys, singing rooms, movie theatres and temples,, just to name a few. The rules are simple, they will not abuse or overuse their phones, as this will be an opportunity to speak to their new friends and teachers, and, of course, speak English!! The students will range in age from 11 to 16, students from grades 5 or 6 to middle school grade 3. The following is a sample of the kind of schedule we will follow. It may change due to unforeseen conditions, such as the weather. This schedule will also illustrate costs, photos, web links, and glimpses of different tourist attractions in Busan and the surrounding area.
We will have breakfast at home, lunches out, and most of our dinners will be at home. One student will wake up 30 minutes earlier than normal to cook breakfast. Another student will assist with the preparation of breakfast and dinner. All students will share in the responsibility of washing dishes after breakfast and dinner. Lunch out is described in the itinerary. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, such as an unexpected restaurant closure, the lunch destination may need to be changed. Students may purchase their own snacks, beverages, and other food items. However, fruit, nuts and other nutritious morning and afternoon snacks will be provided for the students daily.
Students will need to bring a hat/cap, sunscreen, plenty of summer clothing (Uncle Mike has a washing machine), a rain jacket, umbrella for sun and/or rain, hiking boots or a second pair of running shoes, toiletries, bathing towel and beach towel, Cash-Bee (HuMetro) Card, water bottle, a bathing suit, recharger and a camera/smart phone.
Just for your information, Bumin Hospital and the Baik Injae University Hospitals are located nearby Uncle Mike’s.
